Serious burns not only leave physical scars, they leave emotional scars as well. Without treatment, the scars may never heal. Camp Oo-U-La®, Georgia’s only camp for burn-injured children, gives young survivors a place to heal the emotional scars. For one week a year, children come to a camp without the fear of rejection or ridicule regardless of their physical features or limitations.
The campers form bonds from sharing their experiences with peers who have faced the same challenges they have. They also find unconditional friendship and support among camp staff. It takes over 100 volunteer staff members to make camp possible. They help lead these young people down their road to emotional recovery.
Each year the camp staff strives to give campers a week of acceptance and caring away from the obstacles of everyday life. Campers also experience many unique adventures they will never forget. Through these experiences, campers either begin or enhance their recovery process.
The weeklong camp held in Georgia each summer for burn-injured children. Any child between the ages of 6-17 who has sustained a significant burn injury, may attend camp. Transportation to and from camp is provided from designated locations throughout the state of Georgia. The entire cost of camp is provided by the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, Inc. There is no cost to a camper, their family or volunteers.
Camp staff includes medical professionals with experience in emergency and burn injury care. Staff to camper ration varies, but the average is usually 1.5:1. Camp staff is comprised of firefighters, burn unit staff, adult burn survivors and other volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of children. All staff members have been carefully screened, undergo criminal background checks and attend mandatory training sessions prior to camp.
Due to our particular circumstances and number of campers, the actual camp facility may change from year to year to accommodate our needs.
